About us

Founded in 2022 and established as a 501c3 in 2023, Xela Institute of Art has supported the careers of over 30 underrepresented artists across different stages of their practice—including 8+ senior artists, 10+ mid-career artists, and 12+ emerging artists. Artists use the Xela as a site for exploration and recovery, often marking critical junctures in their artistic development.

Xela Institute of Art is one of the few independent, non-collecting institutions in the country and the only museum in Long Beach dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art, performance, and experimental programming. By nurturing a space where artists and communities converge, Xela seeks to expand Long Beach’s cultural landscape and serve as a platform for creatives invested in imagining artistic futures.

Xela exhibitions are available to the public for free by appointment (to accommodate staffing).
